Dental Implants

Dental Implants
Dental implants have advanced the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery exponentially since their creation. They consist of a biocompatible titanium root like structure which fuses with the jawbone. The dental implant serves as an anchor for the placement of a crown fabricated by your dentist or prosthodontist. Dental implants and crowns can restore your smile and the proper function of teeth. With dental implants, our surgeons provide the foundation that enables your dentist to replace individual teeth, multiple teeth and even rebuild the entire mouth. Our surgeons will work closely with your dentist to ensure that you are provided with a successful dental implant.
In certain circumstances, bone grafting procedures will need to be performed to restore the ridge. On occasion, the use of platelet rich plasma can enhance the healing process. Failure of dental implants is rare under the care of our surgeons; however, they will strive to achieve a successful result in every situation.
Zygoma Implants
For patients who have experienced severe bone loss in their maxilla, or upper jaw, zygoma implants provide a solution to restore a smile and foundation without the need for bone grafting. Zygoma implants are anchored into the cheek bones, or zygoma, and can enable oral and maxillofacial surgeons to place fixed dental appliances where they had not been able to do so before. Dr. Schmid was the first oral and maxillofacial surgeon to provide zygoma implants to patients in Central Florida. This procedure can be performed in the Melbourne or Suntree/Rockledge office or in an outpatient ambulatory facility depending on the patient’s need.
