Understanding Zygoma Implants

For individuals who are missing all of their teeth on their upper jaw, Zygoma implants may be a viable solution when it comes to replacing the top row of teeth. A zygoma implant is a type of dental implant specifically designed for the upper jaw where individuals have experienced significant bone loss, but do not want or don’t make good candidates for bone grafts. Here at Sunrise Facial and Oral Surgeons, we offer Zygoma implants for adults who are missing most or all of their upper teeth.

Zygoma Implants VS Standard Dental Implants

Dental implants involve inserting one or more screws into your jaw bone and then attaching a crown to the post. The screws that are inserted into the jaw for standard dental implants are relatively short and rely on the individual having enough bone density to support the implant and the pressures of chewing. When there has been significant bone loss in the jaw, it may be necessary to perform a bone graft. This usually involves taking bone from other parts of the body, like the hip, and inserting it in the jaw in order to facilitate jaw bone growth.

When bone grafting isn’t an option due to extreme re-absorption of the upper jaw bone (maxilla), Zygoma implants can provide the solution. These implants are used to replace the entire row of upper teeth using six long screws. The screws are precisely placed in the alveolar crest and maxillary sinus, and the zygomatic bones are used to anchor the screws.

Since the zygoma implant screws are inserted much deeper into the bones of the face, the procedure can only be performed by an accomplished maxillofacial surgeon. This is because extensive images of the facial bones have to be taken in order to ensure the implants are precisely placed and the screws are not over tightened. Thankfully, our oral surgeons in Brevard County have the knowledge and experience to install Zygoma implants.

Benefits of Zygoma Implants

Zygoma implants permanently attach a denture to the upper jaw, which means there’s no need to take it out at night or soak it. It’s considered much more comfortable than a traditional denture. The benefits include:

  • Great for individuals who have experienced significant re-absorption of the maxilla due to missing teeth
  • Doesn’t require a bone graft
  • Individuals can have a new row of top teeth, in as little as 3 days
  • Any type of food can be eaten almost immediately
  • Improved appearance and confidence

Good Candidates for Zygoma Implants

Zygoma implants are great for individuals of all ages who have several missing or loose teeth in the upper jaw and are at least 17 years of age. These are ideal candidates for Zygoma implants:

  • Individuals with loose teeth in the upper jaw
  • Individuals who wear a full denture on the upper jaw
  • Individuals who do not have enough bone in the upper jaw to support regular dental implants
  • Individuals who have had regular implants and experienced a failure
