Many of our patients ask if lip fillers will help their lips look luscious and youthful. The short answer is yes, that’s exactly what they’re intended to do! Fillers work in a variety of ways to improve the appearance of your lips. The treatment is simple, basically painless and highly effective at making your lips your full and supple.
How do lip fillers work?
A dermal filler is just that: a filler. It adds volume to wrinkles and lines, thus giving you a fresher, younger appearance without the need for invasive cosmetic surgery. The content of these products varies, and some products intended for use in very specific parts of your body. Many contain hyaluronic acid which attracts water particles and makes your skin look softer and fuller. Some prompt your body to create collagen which depletes as you age and can make your skin appear sallow, thin and tired.
Results with dermal fillers typically last for months before another treatment is required. Some newer products can last for as long as two years. Be sure to let your cosmetic surgeon help you decide which filler is right for you.
What’s Restylane?
One of the most popular lip fillers is Restylane. The product is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in your body but depletes as you age. By replacing the hyaluronic acid, your lips take on a plumper, fuller appearance.
Restylane treatment is simple and takes about 20 minutes in a medical office setting. The process involves making several injections into your lips to deliver the product. No incisions are required.
FAQs about Lip Fillers
How long does Restylane last?
Restylane lasts about a year. Over time, the hyaluronic acid in the product is absorbed by your body. When you’re ready for another treatment, it’s a simple as coming in for a brief office visit.
Do the injections hurt?
Not really. The injections feel more like pinches, and they’re over very quickly. You may have some swelling in your lips following treatment, but you shouldn’t experience downtime as you would after a surgical procedure. If you’re overly concerned about discomfort, your surgeon can apply numbing cream on your lips prior to treatment.
Are lip fillers safe?
Yes, lip fillers have been used for years to help men and women look and feel their best. Very few people experience any sort of allergic reaction. Restylane is especially safe since it’s made of a naturally occurring substance. But if there is an issue or you just don’t like the way it looks, Restylane can easily be reversed.
How much do lip fillers cost?
Lip fillers are generally priced by the syringe. The amount of correction you need or want will dictate how many syringes your treatment will require. Restylane is $550 per syringe. But the product last much longer than other lip fillers that may need to be repeated every few weeks.
What if I don’t like it?
If you have your lips filled and don’t like the way it looks, the treatment is reversible. Or you can simply let the product’s effects decrease over time. Restylane is not permanent since it is absorbed by your body over time. Therefore, you don’t have to live with a lip filler for the rest of your life if you’re not satisfied.
Are there other options?
There are other lip fillers to consider, but few have the staying power of Restylane. Fat grafting to your lips is another natural option. During this treatment, fat is harvested from your hips, thighs or buttocks. It’s purified and injected into your lips. Since the fat comes from your own body, there’s no chance of rejection or allergic reaction. Fat grafting generally represents a more permanent solution.
