Like the rest of the bones in our body, the jaw bones continue to change as we age. In some cases, unusual bumps begin to develop on the jawbones, interfering with the fit of removable dentures. These growths are fairly normal; however, they sometimes require removal to restore function to the mouth and improve the fit of prosthetic dental appliances like dentures.
At Sunrise Facial & Oral Surgery, our team has the skill and training to provide our patients with full smile restoration, including pre-prosthetic surgery.
Benefits of a Secure Denture
Secure dentures offer several benefits, including:
- They provide greater comfort and confidence, eliminating worries about the denture slipping out of place at an inopportune time.
- Secure dentures make it easier to bite, chew, and enjoy your favorite foods and regular diet.
- Secure dentures are easier to care for, requiring only the most basic upkeep and dental hygiene.
- A secure denture also means a more seamless, natural-looking smile, which can translate into greater self-confidence.

The Surgery
On the day of your pre-prosthetic surgery, you will receive a warm welcome from our patient care team. We will escort you to a private treatment area and administer anesthesia to ensure your well-being. Once you are comfortable, your doctor will create small incisions as necessary, then perform necessary steps such as bone smoothing and reshaping, bone grafting, or ridge reduction. Most pre-prosthetic surgeries are relatively brief, lasting just an hour or two.
Recovery and Aftercare
Following your surgery, you will be discharged to head home for a few days of rest and recovery. Most patients feel back to normal in under a week, though you can anticipate a few days of tenderness, swelling, and limited diet. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can be used to keep you as comfortable as can be.
