Have you considered getting a facelift but have put it off because you assume it would involve a hospital stay? If so, it might surprise you to learn that our local oral and maxillofacial surgeon right here in Melbourne or Rockledge, Florida can complete the procedure on an outpatient basis. Dr. Kim of Sunrise Facial and Oral Surgery has the training and expertise to complete your facelift procedure in less time than you might think.

Why People Consider Getting a Facelift

Maybe you have taken on a tired appearance even though you usually get enough sleep. You feel it makes you look older than your true age and are considering a facelift to look younger and more energetic. A facelift can also reduce other visible signs of aging such as deeply set wrinkles or facial sagging. Whatever your specific issue, only you can decide whether you should pursue a facelift or not. We hope the information provided in this blog will help you make the best decision for your health and appearance.

How to Know if a Facelift is Right for You

If the signs of aging on your face or neck bother you and you meet the criteria set by your oral and maxillofacial surgeon, we consider you a good candidate for this procedure. In addition to the typical signs of aging mentioned above, you could be considering a facelift because of loose skin under your jaw, chin, or cheeks or crow’s feet, which are deep lines starting at your eyes that run to the bottom of your nose and mouth.

Here are the criteria we like to have patients at our Melbourne or Rockledge oral surgery center meet before scheduling a facelift:

  • You have realistic expectations of the procedure. We tell patients to look for an improvement in their appearance and not to expect perfection. For example, a 65-year-old patient should not expect to look like she is 25 regardless of any plastic surgery.
  • You are a non-smoker or quit smoking several months ago.
  • Your overall health is good.
  • You have attempted non-surgical methods to reduce aging and improve your appearance but have felt disappointed with the results.

We are happy to meet with you for a consultation to give you more information about facelifts.

People With Certain Health Conditions Should Not Get a Facelift

Our team of experts advise anyone with unrealistic expectations to take the time to study the procedure more and determine if they still want to proceed. There is no rush, and we will never pressure you. We also cannot perform plastic surgery on people who smoke due to the risk of complications that can include slow wound healing. You should pass on getting a facelift if you have any of these health conditions as well:

  • An immune disorder that affects the nerves and muscles in your face such as lupus.
  • Your skin has sustained extensive sun damage or tends to be especially sensitive.
  • You currently take medication that suppresses your immune system. This classification of medication is known as immunosuppressants, and people typically take them after an organ transplant or when they have an immune disorder. Like smoking, these drugs pose a risk because they may suppress the healing of wounds.
  • Any other chronic medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure that could prevent or slow your healing after facial surgery.

Steps Involved in an Outpatient Facelift Procedure

The typical facelift involves your oral and maxillofacial surgeon making several small incisions at the points on your face that you consider problem areas and tightening the skin. Before you receive any incisions, however, your surgeon will provide you with sedation that blocks nerve sensations and pain. Temporary swelling and bruising are both normal after a facelift and should subside within a few days. You should be able to resume normal activities within about two weeks. In the meantime, be sure to apply an ice pack to the surgical areas and rest as much as you can.
