Whether caused by genetic factors or a traumatic incident, jaw misalignment can impact your smile and hinder daily functions like biting and chewing. At Sunrise Facial & Oral Surgery, we specialize in corrective jaw procedures capable of restoring your jaw’s form and function.
We’re proud to be among the few offices in Brevard County offering continuity defect reconstruction for patients who’ve lost substantial parts of their jaw due to trauma or cancer. This procedure not only promotes healthy bone growth but also rejuvenates confidence and self-esteem in those overcoming trauma and illness.
What Does Corrective Jaw Surgery Fix?
Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is often necessary when teeth and bite problems cannot be corrected by orthodontics or braces alone. When the jaw is underdeveloped or overdeveloped, it can cause problems ranging from TMJ pain, bite problems, facial deformities, and tooth damage. Utilizing predictive pre-operative planning, orthognathic surgery can be performed in such a way as to elevate functional jaw growth discrepancies and lead to favorable life-changing habits.
The First Steps
Your journey begins with a consultation with one of our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons. This appointment gives you an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about treatment options. It also allows your doctor to evaluate your jaw and confirm your eligibility for a safe, successful surgery.

The Surgery
On the day of your surgery, you will be welcomed by our clinical care team and then led back to a private treatment area. We will administer anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the surgery. The timeline for corrective jaw surgery can vary but typically falls somewhere between two and four hours.
Recovery Phase
Most patients can resume their normal school and work activities within a week or so, though you will need to abstain from vigorous exercise for six weeks. Prescription and over-the-counter pain medications may be used to ensure comfort during recovery. Your recovery may also involve consultations with an orthodontist, who will help ensure a seamless smile as your jaw heals.
